(April 2012) Nigeria requires large amounts of land to be irrigated. It has many reservoirs and rivers but the difficulty has been raising water from these surface bodies into the farmers fields. NEW ERA ENERGY has installed at Gwarzo, Kano State, a demonstration surface water pumping solution that utilises a Whisper 500 wind turbine in conjuction with an electrical water pump. The solution takes water from a large reservoir and by lifting it over the reservoir embankment is able to redistribute the water into a network of irrigation channels that cover an area of approximately 10 hectares. As a result over 300 people can now be employed and farmers can plant and harvest crops all year instead of only once per year in the rainy season.
This is a simple solution from NEW ERA ENERGY but one which has the potential to revolutionize farming in Nigeria.
